Tip For Fixing Pet Eye In Your Pictures

We have added a new section for pets and horses and offer a variety of personalized gifts for the pet owners and lovers. With some of the picture that people submit to us there are a large percentage that have what we call "Pet Eye". It's like red eye in people but it usually shows up as a yellow circle where the black part of the eye is suppose to be. This occurs if the pet is looking directly at the camera when the flash goes off. The light reflects from the back part of the eye.

There are many photo editing programs that remove red eye from humans with the click of a button but I haven't used one that would take care of Pet Eye. There is a simple technique to take care of this problem that I would like to share. I personally use Photo Shop Elements 5 but this technique can easily be adapted to other photo editing software as well.

  • Start by opening your image, create a copy of the image, and zoom in on the pet eye area.
  • Activate your software's paintbrush tool. Set the brush to a medium-soft edge and a size slightly larger than the problem pet eye area.
  • Set your paint (foreground) color to black.
  • Click on each eye to paint over the pet eye reflections. You may need to click a few times with the paintbrush to cover the entire problem area.
  • The picture will look a little strange and flat at this point because there is no "glint" of light reflection in the eye.
  • Set your paintbrush to a very small, hard brush. Usually you should not need it more than 3-5 pixels.
  • Set your paint color to white.
  • Look on the original photo and take note of where the glints appear
  • Highlight the copy you created and in the dark part of each eye place a very small white area in approximately the same place where the glint was in the original photo

The results from following these simple steps may be seen below
