Baseball: A Few Interesting Facts

Consensus has it that baseball originated as “Rounders”. It was an amateur game played on sandlots. The game actually had its beginnings, as we know it, around 1861. The first professional baseball league began in 1871. Today, there are teams throughout the U.S.

There are two leagues, the National League and the American League. In the 1920’s, baseball became a favorite when Babe Ruth , playing for the New York Yankees, became a “Home Run Hero”. Another well known athlete was Jackie Robinson, of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was the first African-American player in the major leagues in 1947. Throughout the history of baseball, many players have pitched, hit, caught, and become “All Stars”. What little boy doesn’t dream of one day playing in the Nationals and breaking his favorite player’s record?

Today, baseball has become a part of most American families’ lives. They either watch it on T.V., go to the stadium to watch the pros, or spend hours each week watching their own child play T-ball, softball, or baseball. Family reunions involve baseball or softball games, or at least a game of catch during the day. What began 150 years ago now has become a part of the American family as we know it today.
